What is hair loss?
Hair loss, also named as baldness or alopecia, is a loss of hair from the head or body. Baldness can develop in people at any phase of life. It is caused due to a genetic factor, lack of diet, hormonal factor and stress.
How does hair loss occur?
Hair loss occurs due to shrinking of hair follicles that gradually leads to the development into smaller and thinner hairs, which ultimately do not emerge from the follicle.
Symptoms of hair loss
Signs and symptoms of baldness may include:
- Sudden loosening of hair: When washing or combing your hair, hair may come out. Physical or emotional reasons may contribute to the thinning of hairs.
- Steady thinning on top of head: This type of hair loss is mostly seen in men and women and affects them with growing age.
- Full-body hair loss: Conditions and treatments such as chemotherapy for cancer can result in massive loss of hairs all over the body.
- Circular or patchy bald spots: This type of hair loss affects the scalp, but sometimes can occur in eyebrows or beard. In this, people see smooth or coin-sized bald spots on their scalp. In some cases, your skin may become painful or itchy before the hair falls out.
- Patches of scaling spread all over the scalp: This is a sign of ringworm. It may be accompanied by redness, broken hair and swelling.
